NOTICE OF CONSULTATION SECTION 106 OF THE NATIONAL HISTORIC PRESERVATION ACT OF 1966 AS AMENDED (2006) HONOHINA AHUPUAA, HILO MOKU, HAWAII ISLAND FEDERAL-AID PROJECT NUMBER: BR-019-2(077) TAX MAP KEY (3) 3-2-001 Notice is hereby given that the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) and the State of Hawaii, Department of Transportation (HDOT) propose to rehabilitate Nanue Stream Bridge, located in Ninole on Hawaii Island, approximately 16 miles north of Hilo. The bridge carries Hawaii Belt Road over Nanue Stream. HDOT proposes to rehabilitate the Nanue Stream bridge’s deteriorating substructure, and upgrade the bridge railings to meet current safety standards. The proposed improvements include but are not limited to: 1) improve traffic and safety for motorists and pedestrians; 2) meet current State and Federal design guidelines; and 3) address bridge maintenance concerns. During construction, the Nanue Stream Bridge will remain open to public traffic; however, daily weekday lane closures are anticipated with one lane in each direction remaining open. Night work is also anticipated to reduce traffic impacts. Construction duration is anticipated to be 24 months starting in September 2024. Pursuant to Section 106 of the NHPA, Native Hawaiian organizations and Native Hawaiian descendants with ancestral, lineal, or cultural ties to, cultural and historical property knowledge of, and/or concerns for, and cultural or religious attachment to the proposed project area are requested to contact HDOT. Other individuals and organizations with demonstrated legal, economic or historic preservation interest in the undertaking are asked to contact HDOT and share information you may have on historical and cultural sites that you may have knowledge of within the proposed APE. We welcome any information within 30 days of notice.
