PUBLIC NOTICE Public Comments Sought for Five-Year Review Popoki Target Area Formerly Used Defense Site (FUDS) Puna District, Island of Hawaii, Hawaii The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) has begun the third five-year review of the remedial action undertaken at the former Popoki Target Area. The 640-acre former Popoki Target Area is located approximately seven miles southeast of Keaau, just off Keaau-Pahoa Road at the south end of the Hawaiian Paradise Park subdivision. The site was used by the U.S. Navy during World War II as a target practice area. The remedial action removed and disposed of surface and subsurface munitions and explosives of concern in a 93-acre bombing target area and a 15-acre maneuver area. Sampling determined that munitions constituents did not pose a risk at the site. The purpose of the five-year review is to determine if the remedial action is and will continue to be protective of human health and the environment. The USACE requests input and information from the public to assist with this evaluation. The five-year review report is scheduled for completion by the end of January 2025. When completed, a copy of the report will be available at the information repository below. To submit comments please contact: For project information please contact: Benjamin M.
