RICHARD K. SMITH 91, longtime Hilo resident, died on July 8, 2024 at the Yukio Okutsu State Veterans Home. Dick,as he was known by friends, was born in Dayton, Ohio on October 1, 1932. During his time at Trotwood High School (Class of 1950), and the University of Cincinnati (Class of 1954), he dedicated hundreds of hours to local YMCA’s. After graduation, Dick served in the US Army at Fort Carson in Colorado Springs. Upon honorable discharge in 1955, he settled in Denver where he met his wife Doris and began his career with the Gates Rubber Company. In 1963, Dick’s work brought him and his family to Honolulu, and soon afterword to Hilo, where he lived the rest of his life. After working for Dillingham Brothers and Central Parts Company, he and his wife Doris received real estate licenses and founded Smith Properties in 1978. Dick served as President until his death. No one who met Dick Smith will forget his compassion, his humor and his dedication to service. He is survived by his wife, Doris, his sons, Eric and Steven and four grandchildren.
