PUBLIC NOTICE Burial Site Discovery Puna District, Island of Hawai’i Notice is hereby given to interested parties that a burial site has been discovered by KAPU Sacred Hawaiian Burials (Keoni Alvarez, RR3 Box 1043, Pahoa, Hawai’i 96778, 808-647-5278). The remains are located in Waikahekahe Iki, Puna District, Island of Hawai’i, TMK (3) 1-5-023:040. Nearby Land Commission Awards include LCA nos. 8520-B to Lahilahi, Gini and 8522-B to Kale (Davis). The landowner is Hawaiian Paradise Park Owners Association (Jon Loehndorf, HC3 Box 11000, Kea’au, Hawai’i 96749, 808-966-4500). The SHPD has assigned State Inventory of Historic Places number 50-10-45-31430 to the burial site. Per Hawai’i Revised Statutes §6E-43 and Hawai’i Administrative Rules §13-300, this is considered a previously identified burial site. Based on the context, the burial is over 50 years old and likely Native Hawaiian. The remains were left in place following identification, and preservation in place is proposed. A final determination regarding the treatment of these burials will be made by the Hawai’i Island Burial Council, in consultation with SHPD and any identified lineal and/or cultural descendants. Individuals with information regarding these burials should contact SHPD Hawai’i Island Burial Sites Specialist, Mr. Traven Apiki, at 40 Po’okela Street, Hilo, Hawai’i 96720 (traven.apiki@hawaii.gov, 808-829-9322) within thirty (30) days of this notice.
