RICHARD O. LUNDBORG, M.D. Dr. Richard (Dick) Lundborg, the first anesthesiologist on the Big Island, died on November 21, 2023, at his home in Spokane, WA after living with Alzheimer’s for eight years. He and his family moved to Hilo in 1972, and he worked with all five hospitals to improve anesthesia, respiratory and emergency care. He also worked closely with the local branch of the American Lung Association and was chosen as the honorary chairman of the annual Super Kids competition and education venture in 1979. He was also honored as Physician of the Year for Community Service (State of Hawaii) in 1981. He was an avid scuba diver along the Kona coast and in Micronesia, sailboat captain in Hilo Bay and hiker in the Honoli’i River Valley as well as a writer of island-inspired poems and songs. Dick was born March 6th, 1933, in Milan, Minnesota. He graduated from Gustavus Adolphus College in St. Peter, MN, and received his M.D. degree from the University of Minnesota in 1959. That summer he entered the Army for his internship year at Tripler Army Hospital in Honolulu. From 1960-1962 he was battalion surgeon in the 34th Armor Tank Battalion (4th Infantry Division) at Ft. Lewis, WA. After his residency in anesthesiology, he became a consultant on the staff of the Mayo Clinic (Rochester, MN) for ten years working primarily in cardio-thoracic and obstetrical anesthesia. After fifteen years practicing in Hilo, he embarked on a ten-year advocacy for health reform as a legislative consultant with the Hawaii Medical Association, a candidate for the state legislature and a volunteer on political campaigns. He is survived by his wife of 67 years, JoAnn; children: Mark (Julie) Lundborg, Kari (Eric) Bowton, Kristi (Scott) Eckert; siblings Gary Lundborg, Lorry Lundborg; nine grandchildren and one great grandson. ~ Aloha ‘Oe ~
