NOTICE OF CONSULTATION
SECTION 106 OF THE NATIONAL HISTORIC PRESERVATION ACT OF 1966 AS AMENDED (2006) and Hawaii Revised Statutes (HRS) Title 1. Chapter 6E Historic Preservation.

The Hawaii Army National Guard (HIARNG) Demolition of the Vehicle Maintenance Shop (VMS) Building #002, a military Quonset Hut, and Building #004, a vehicle storage area, within the HIARNG Kealakekua Readiness Center (RC), located on State of Hawaii property, east of Mamalahoa Highway, at 81-1032 Nani Kupuna Pl, Kealakekua, HI 96750; TMK: (3) 8-1-002:056.

Notice is hereby given that the HIARNG, in cooperation with the Army National Guard (ARNG), proposes to demolish the VMS/Quonset Hut Building #002 and Vehicle Storage Area Building #004, at the HIARNG Kealakekua RC, in Kealakekua, Hawaii Island, Hawaii. This demolition will be conducted using federal funds and constitutes a federal undertaking as defined by 36 Code of Federal Regulations (CFR) §800.16(y) and Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966 (NHPA), as amended. The work will occur entirely within the HIARNG Kealakekua RC, therefore, the HIARNG defines the Project's Area of Potential Effect (APE) as the Kealakekua Readiness Center parcel. The proposed demolition will remove the entire Quonset Hut and attached Vehicle Storage Area Building #004. The Quonset Hut, Building #002 and attached Vehicle Storage Area, Building #004, have been determined eligible for listing on the State and National Registers of Historic Places, pursuant to Criteria A and C, for the structures associated with the Cold War increase in National Guard troop strength and readiness and as an example of early 1960s modified one-unit armories. Pursuant to Section 106 of the NHPA and HRS Title 1. Chapter 6E §6E-3.5 Consultation, Native Hawaiian Organizations and Native Hawaiian descendants with ancestral, lineal or cultural ties to, with cultural and historic property knowledge of and/or with concerns for and/or cultural or religious attachment to the proposed Project, as well as other individuals and/or organizations with demonstrated legal, economic or historic preservation interest in the Project are asked to provide comments and share information you may have on historical and cultural sites that you may have knowledge of within the Project's APE.

Interested parties are requested to submit written comments to the Director, Public Affairs, State of Hawaii, Department of Defense, MAJ (RET) Jeff Hickman, at (808) 441-7000, or by email at
